Dedicated to the Lord of the Universe, this temple is closed to the non-Hindus. The present form of the temple was built in 1198. It is one of the holiest Hindu temples in India which employs 6000 men to perform the temple rituals and maintenance. It is estimated that 20,000 people are dependent on this temple. The most important event associated with this temple is Rathyatra Festival. It is one of the most celebrated annual religious festival in India. The images of Lord Jagannath, his brother and and sister are brought out of the temples and placed on three separate chariots (14 meters high and having 16 wheels) pulled by over 4000 pullars and devotees.
