Official language of Jammu and Kashmir is Urdu. People here speak in Urdu. Other languages such as Hindi and English are very less spoken here. Majority of the tourist who come here do hire a guide.

Last time we visited Kashmir on occasion of going to Amarnathjee, we didn face any problem at all since Urdu is very similar to Hindi language.

You can use Hindi and get around the place. Knowing Urdu is an advantage or else you could choose to use English as the agents who help tourists do understand english.
